Forge is a class based arena style co-op fighting game developed by Dark Vale Games.
Classes: There are currently 7 classes, two of which have been added since release for free and you can expect more to come. You have the 4 dps classes which are Pyromancer, Pathfinder, Assassin, and the new Ravager; all of which have different methods for damage from lots of damage over time spells to being able to backstab targets. The Warden is both an offensive and defensive class thanks to its two shouts that can either increase the damage done by their team, or increase everyone's health while also causing them to take less damage. Tinker being the newest addition to the team will allow players to support and be offensive at the same time, with being able to place turrets and barricades at key locations, while also building cata pads that allow you and your team to reach places up high. Finally you have the Shaman, which is possibly the most important class because he can heal everyone to full health and keeping people alive during death matches make it that much harder for the enemy team to win. All classes have 8 abilities which can all be used in combination with each other to execute devasting combos.
Game Modes: The game modes are the same as the ones you would see in any fps, death match, capture the flag, and arena. Rules for each mode are what you already know, death match requires you to get 25 kills before the other team, capture the flag just requires you to capture their flag, and arena is death match without respawning. Even though the game modes are as basic as they come, it will still seem new and refreshing because it is not just a basic shooter.
Experience: Playing matches will earn you experience which you can use out of game to apply to the classes. Each level that you apply to a class, up to level 99, unlocks different types of customization from stats to cosmetics. The nice thing about the stat customization is that you must take points out of one area and put into another, so even a level 99 will have the same amount of total stats as a new person, except they will be more specialized. You can also unlock alterations to the skills that classes have, such as making it so the Shaman drain spell has longer range but the actual effect is lessened. They will take a while to unlock, but there are also cosmetic choices to be unlocked high up in the level ranges.
Options/Graphics/Sound: Although the options can be a little bare when it comes to graphics and such, the best thing is that you can completely rebind which buttons activate the skills for each class. The graphics are fairly good and don't get in the way of the action. Sound is something that needs to get worked on however, there is basically only one song that you will be listening to the whole time, from the main menu all the way into the action packed combat.
Negatives: Even though it is a "complete" game, it still just has a beta feeling about it, though that is probably because of the recent large updates it gets adding and fixing a lot of stuff. You are also forced to use the Steam game browser instead of using an in game browser if you are interested in choosing your own server to play on, or else it will just pick one for you. This can be a problem when it constantly tries connecting you to a server that is already full and gives that error message, instead of simply ignoring all full servers automatically.
~~~~~~Should You Play It?~~~~~~
Casual(Easy): Compared to all other death match and capture the flag games, this is for sure one of the harder ones since its not just shooting guns and killing people in 2 seconds. Alls skill have to pretty much be perfectly aimed at their targets for them to trigger. If normal games seem too hard, it would be best to play ranked arena because losing in there will cause you to play with people that are more your skill.
Casual(Quick Play Sessions): All game modes can last up to 15 mintes if the time runs out, though most of the time one of the teams will win early so anyone that wants quick games will be able to enjoy Forge.
Hardcore: Each of the classes have abilities that can be used to do advanced tactics, such as the pyromancer being able to fly almost anywhere with his blast ability. There is also a ranked arena mode which will make some people strive to become the best.
Completionist: There are a few cosmetics to unlock, but it will take a while to get them. It will also take a long time getting every class to level 99, though luckily the experience that you earn in game goes into a global pool so you're not forced to use a class to level it.
~~~~~~Should You Buy It?~~~~~~
Forge has now become free to play along with some DLC packages that you can purchase. These packages range from 15 dollars to 75 dollars. Whether you buy the cheapest or most expensive one, you get almost the exact same thing from them all. They all include 30 days of double experience, and one cosmetic set that is exclusive to each package. This means that you have to spend almost 150 dollars just to get all the limited clothing. Since the game does not appear to be pay to win, it is still worth playing even if you don't want the double experience.
